Dr. John

Welcome to the big show..

I know that this blog generally focuses on the NBA and the Yanks but this Saturday is the NFL draft. I emailed ESPN and through a bunch of phone calls and some family connections I spoke with Mel Kiper jr.He informed me that I should speak with his source. His main source of knowledge is a guy named Dr. John . I spoke with this DR. John, and after major persuasion he agreed to write a mock draft for us.. Let the debate begin ...He is a little off the cuff but he knows his stuff..

WELL HERE IT IS. THE DAY HAS FINALLY ARRIVED. FOR MY MONEY, THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF THE NFL SEASON. I DON’T WANT TO BOTHER WITH WRITING A BIG INTRO BECAUSE NO ONE GIVES A RAT’S ASS ABOUT THE INTRO TO A MOCK DRAFT.

WITH THE FIRST PICK OF THE 2009 NFL DRAFT,
1. THE DETROIT LIONS SELECT: MATTHEW STAFFORD, QB FROM THE UNIVERISTY OF GEORGIA. I DON’T KNOW WHY THERE HAS BEEN ALMOST NO TALK RECENTLY ABOUT HIM. AT 6’3, 228 POUNDS, MATTHEW HAS THE PHYSICAL TOOLS NECESSARY TO BE A VERY GOOD NFL QB. I SAY ONLY VERY GOOD BECAUSE AS GREAT OF AN ARM AS HE HAS, HE IS NOT AS ACCURATE AND MAY NOT HAVE THE “IT” FACTORS THAT NFL SCOUTS SEEK IN A FRANCHISE QB. HE IS VERY SMART AND HAS PLAYED IN A PRO SYSTEM OFFENSE FOR ALL THREE OF HIS COLLEGE YEARS. ALTHOUGH I THINK LIONS FANS MAY NOT BE THRILLED WITH THIS PICK, I JUST DON’T SEE ANYONE ELSE MERITING THE FIRST SELECTION.
2. ST. LOUIS RAMS: JASON SMITH, OT, BAYLOR. Over the last few months, all mock drafts have had Jason Smith locked into this spot. Recently however, there have been reports of the Rams being torn between him and Eugene Monroe. I am here to tell you that these rumors are erroneous by all accounts. Jason has the feet and size you want in a left tackle. And believe it or not, he can grow even more in his 6’5 309 pound frame. It would be a huge mistake for the Rams to not pick a tackle here to replace future Hall-of-Famer Orlando Pace.
3. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: AARON CURRY, LB, WAKE FOREST: As much as I think the Chiefs want to trade this pick, I see no other player Scott Pioli wants more than the most talented defensive player in the draft. Scouts, however, point to the fact that he is not a dominating pass rusher off the edge, and with the Chiefs shifting to 3-4, it is crucial they find someone that can rush the passer AND fall back into coverage. Curry may be better suited for just putting his hand down and rush the passer. Curry is too talented and too valuable a prospect to pass up. If need be, he can be shifted into an inside linebacker in the 3-4 and be a dominant linebacker for years to come.
4. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: MARK SANCHEZ, QB, USC: If I was Seattle, I would pick Michael Crabtree. I think it’s a big mistake to count on T.J. Housmenzadah (There is no way that’s how you spell it, but I took a shot at it). He is 32 years old and has been living off of fat checks because of Ocho cinco taking the double teams and clearing the field for him. Although decent, I’m not convinced he puts them over the top. Sanchez, from what I hear, is a great kid and would fit in nicely with this team because he only has one year of starting experience and would gain tremendously from riding the bench for the next year or two. He has been the talk of the draft class up until this point.
5. CLEVELAND BROWNS: BRIAN ORAKPO, DE/OLB, TEXAS: The New York Jets of the Midwest. Mangini will bring the same tough defense and boring offense to a Browns team that desperately needs some offensive fireworks. Already trading Kellen Winslow and most likely trading Braylon Edwards to Giants, I don’t see Mangini pulling the trigger on anything but a defensive player. Orakpo is the best Hybrid player on the board and will fit in nicely with what the Browns want to do on defense. I don’t buy into the Brady Quinn trade talks. I think Mangini would be foolish to trade him.
6. CINCINNATI BENGALS: B.J. RAJI, DT, BOSTON COLLEGE: Finally, the Bungels (yes, bungels) get the Defensive Tackle they have been long awaiting. It’s not even close who the best DT in the draft is. BJ is big enough to play Nose Tackle in a 3-4 at 6’2 340 pound frame. What has scouts drooling about him is not only his ability to take on the double team in running situations, but his motor and his ability to collapse the pocket on passing downs. With his explosiveness and tenacity, this guy is a BEAST. Don’t pay any attention to the failed drug test. I think it was fabricated just like with Warren Sapp back in the early 90’s. So what if he smokes weed, who doesn’t (Except for Ricky Williams, of course).
7. OAKLAND RAIDERS: MICHAEL CRABTREE, WR, TEXAS TECH: I feel so bad for Michael. Most players’ careers go to die in the black hole recently. I think Jamarcus Russel is a bust and Crabtree will have a tough time adjusting to the NFL game. Still, his potential is through the roof and leads a strong class of wide receivers. I don’t see Jeremy Macklin here unless if Crabtree is picked before him. Definitely not Andre Smith, which some mocks have.
8. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: JERMEY MACKLIN, WR, MISSOURI: Despite the signing of Torry Holt, I see Jacksonville trying to sure up there less than stellar WR’s corps. Macklin is one of the most explosive players in the draft and Jacksonville can use his speed to stretch the field for Maurice Jones-Drew. I thing Macklin will learn how to be a good professional with Holt being the guiding light. I also foresee Jaguars trading this pick to the J-E-T-S if Sanchez is still on board.
9. GREEN BAY PACKERS: EUGENE MONROE, OT, VIRGINIA: Because the defensive players the Packers targeted are off the board, I see them fixing there other pressing need and that is an offensive tackle. The ones they have now have been ravaged with injuries and are aging fast. As mentioned before, Scouts will tell you that this 6’5 309 pound belle mouth is better than Jason Smith. He definitely is a better pass blocker as scouts have graded him the best pass blocker in the draft. I think Aaron Maybin or any other defensive player is a reach here so this is a total value pick at #9.
10. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: MICHAEL OHER, OT, MISSISSIPPI: Mr. Old Skool, drop pants at halftime Coach Mike Singletary gets his first crack at the draft. It would not surprise me if he stretches for a defensive player because he wants to bring in his own guys. However, I just think that Right Tackle is too pressing a need for him to overlook. I would put Andre Smith here, but Mike wants guys who can make it at least half way up his newly implemented “Puke Hill” at the 49ers facility. Smith also presents some character issues and does not want to have to throw a player off the field again (ala Vernon Davis).
11. BUFFALO BILLS: ROBERT AYERS, DE, TENNESSEE: For the record, I think it was brilliant to bring in TO. For one, they will get a WR that still feels like he has something to prove. But most importantly, it will put fans (especially in Canada) back in their seats. The Bills need a DE opposite Aaron Schobel badly. With above average quickness and pass rusher techniques, Ayers is the perfect complement. It’s a tossup between him or Tyson Jackson, but Ayers speed and quickness make him the better pick here.
12. DENVER BRONCOS: TYSON JACKSON,DE, LSU: The Broncos WILL NOT, I REPEAT, WILL NOT draft a QB here or with any high draft picks. Ego Mcdaniel is out to prove the world that Kyle Orton is better than Jay Cutler. Anyway, the Broncos gave up more points than anyone on defense and must sure up this side of the football, especially if they want to switch to a 3-4. The Denver Patriots want a guy that could stuff the run and play end in their new defense and Jackson, with his energy and strength makes sense here.
13. WASHIGTON REDSKINS: ANDRE SMITH, OT, ALABAMA: On Miami sports radio, they have called Jason Campbell the African American Jay Feidler. He has been inconsistent throughout his career and it’s obvious that no one in Washington thinks he can get the job done. Having said that, I don’t think they have enough to trade up to the 3rd spot to grab Sanchez. If for some reason Sanchez falls to the 8th spot, you bet Washington will make a call to Jacksonville. If they stay put, which is what most experts have them doing, they will select Smith because of his overwhelming talent and their need for a RT.
14. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: CHRIS “BEANIE” WELLS, RB, OHIO ST: More and more teams are staying away from selecting RB’s in the first round. It used to be the RB’s going in the top ten, but not anymore. This is an interesting spot in the draft because I think very quietly teams want Wells and may trade up for him. I think Wells would have been a top ten pick if not for durability issues. Wells would be a great replacement for Mcallister and will take off a lot of pressure from Bush. Although I still think Bush is somewhat of a bust, I still think he can be extremely dangerous if he doesn’t have to carry the ball 20-30 times a game. It would not surprise me if they select Malcom Jenkins here, but I don’t think he is an upgrade over anything they have now. The corners this year is a very weak class.
15. HOUSTON TEXANS: EVERETTE BROWN, DE, FSU: I think Houston may go linebacker here but I think with Everette on the board, he is too good to pass up. At 6’2 256 ponds, Brown was extremely productive in school with double digit tackles for loss in each of his three seasons at FSU. He is extremely durable and has very good speed. He may struggle a bit against the run, but his upside is tremendous.
16. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS: MALCOLM JENKINS, CB, OHIO ST: Like I said earlier, I don’t like the corners coming out of this draft. I think San Diego just takes Jenkins because he is a safe pick. He is extremely talented, but doesn’t have that recovery speed NFL Personnel like in a corner. Scouts think he will eventually be moved to safety where his skills may suit him better. I think Bolts can use him because I think that secondary is very overrated. You can’t have enough corners in this league. I do see them picking Rey Maualuga here but because of his off-field issues I see him dropping drastically.
17. NEW YORK JETS: DARRIUS HEYWARD-BEY, WR, MARYLAND: As painful as this is for me to write, I unfortunately see the J-E-T-S stinkers picking up a very solid talent here. Darrius had the fastest 40 time out of all the WR’s coming out and has size the Jets covet. However, there are questions about his ability to make the big play and his hands. There have been concerns about his route running, but I think with Cotchery in there, they don’t really need him to run the tough routes. Rex Ryan’s crew will run a lot and needs someone to keep the secondary honest on first and second downs.
18. DENVER BRONCOS: AARON MAYBIN, DE, PENN STATE: Maybin’s stock has been dropping because of his need to bulk up and people think he may be too small. I think he would be a steal if the broncos pick him up here because I think Maybin will be a very good pro. Penn State has a nack of producing very productive linebackers. Again, Denver wants defense and wants to sure it up with their two first round selections.
19. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: JOSH FREEMAN, QB, KANSAS STATE: It will be very interesting what happens with Mr. Freeman. Freeman was invited to the NFL draft which means there is a very strong possibility he may go early. They usually don’t invite guys into the green room if they are picked in the lower portion of the draft. However, with recent history of Brady Quinn and Aaron Rodgers, I think we may have ourselves another feel bad for the guy waiting in the green room story. A lot of people are comparing him to Daunte Culpeper. I hope it’s the one from the Vikings and not the one from Dolphins or Lions. He is huge guy and has a canon for an arm. Don’t overestimate an arm as I can refer you to Jeff George. The QB position is about the whole package. I don’t think he has it but we will see what Tampa can do with him. Byron Leftwich is not the QB you want to mentor a young pup.
20. DETROIT LIONS: EBEN BRITTON, OT, ARIZONA: Now that the Lions have their QB of the future, they need someone to protect that expensive investment. Eben is the next best available Left Tackle in the draft. Even though he does not grade out as strong as the other OT’s, he is very consistent and has above average pass and run blocking skills. Also he is extremely durable.
21. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: KNOWSHON MORENO, RB, GEORGIA: I AM HAVING A TOUGH TIME UNDERSTANDING WHY THEY TRADED SO MUCH FOR Jason Peters. He has never had good attitude and I think the Eagles could have found an adequate young OT in the draft that would have costed them far less. They gave up too much for him. Don’t be surprised if they draft a WR here but I have a hunch the WASHINGTON will end up with Boldin If not it is either here or back to the desert for Boldin. If they trade for Boldin, Arizona will have this pick. Anyway, Westbrook turns 30 this season and needs someone to help him carry the load. Moreno is the best back available and maybe even in the draft. They must add a weapon here to keep McNabb happy. Westbrook is the most underrated player in the NFL. Without him, they are a below average offense, even with DeSean Jackson.
22. MINNESOTA VIKINGS: PERCEY HARVIN, WR, FLORIDA: As much as you got to respect the Gators for winning a national championship in two of the last three years, the difference between them and the University Miami is that they almost never produce quality NFL players, let alone a WR while Miami wins BCS championships AND produces not only Pro Bowlers, but Hall of famers (Ray Lewis, Warren Sapp, Ed Reed, Jim Kelly, etc.). I think Percy Harvin, like his other Florida Alumni, will be a HUGE bust. I think like Reggie Bush he will be electric at first and then fade away. If the Vikings don’t overuse him, I think he will be an above average returner, but that is a best case scenario.
23. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: CLAY MATTHEWS, OLB, USC: It amazes me how New England always seems to have a plethora of draft picks (11 this year) Note to all the NFL teams out there: STOP GIVING THESE F***IN BASTARDS DRAFT PICKS. Matthews has a great skill set and has football written all over him. I keep reading that he has a bloodiness about him which I have no clue what that means. This year is the last year of this decade and football history tells us that this may be the last year of New England dominance before they start slipping. I think Brady has only this year and next year because Moss will start slowing down and the defense will need retooling. But let us see how he comes back from the injury. Don’t be surprised if they take a RB here. I know they picked up Fred Taylor, but he is old and Laurence Marooney sucks right now.
24. ATLANTA FALCONS: BRANDON PETTIGREW, TE, OKLAHOMA STATE: Another New England heir (Thomas Dimitroff) is doing magical things in Atlanta. Who would have thought this team would be this good so fast. Atlanta may go defense here, but I don’t see them liking anyone this high. So they go with the best TE and the only one worthy of first round consideration.
25. MIAMI DOLPHINS: HAKEEM NICKS, WR, NORTH CAROLINA: Finally I got to the best team in football. I did all of this just to fill out this team’s pick. Ha Ha I love it. Despite Parcells history and experts opinions, I think that Parcells will go with a WR and here is why. They picked up a CB in Eric Green for depth and they picked up Cameron Wake which was the Lawrence Taylor of the Canadian league. If they can they WILL trade down, however I don’t see that happening unless if the Giants really like Nicks and don’t get Braylon Edwards. Nicks has size, playmaking ability and good speed. His only knock is that he gained weight since the combine which worries scouts. I see the Dolphin s drafting a NT and CB in the second round. GO DOLPHINS. OK I’m done…..Na just joking….onwards we go…..
26. BALTIMORE RAVENS: KENNY BRITT, WR, RUTGERS: I think this pick will be the receiver the Dolphins don’t choose. Either Britt or Nicks would be a good pick here because, like the dolphins, they desperately need a WR. Britt brings size and surprising speed. He is a huge target in the red-zone. Don’t be surprised if they take a middle linebacker here as the heir apparent to Ray Lewis (either Rey Maualuga or James Laurinaitis).
27. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: PERIA JERRY, DT, MISSISSIPPI: I think people are dead wrong when they say that the Colts are in desperate need for a #1 wide receiver. Reggie Wayne has been carrying that Wide Receiver’s corps longer than most people will give him credit for, and Anthony Gonzalez will be a very solid #2. DT is much more important and it must be filled before they attend to a WR. Jerry would be a perfect fit for the Tampa-two and will fill the big gaping hole in the middle. However, if Nicks or some other top receiver falls to them, than they will take that WR instead of Jerry because I don’t think he is that much better than Ron Brace and the rest of the DT’s coming out. But they should not reach at WR because there are other good ones later in the draft.
28. BUFFALO BILLS: WILLIAM BEATTY, OT, UCONN: Bills take Beatty because he is the next best available tackle in the draft. If they don’t select him, either they will reach for Duke Robinson from Oklahoma or Max Unger from Oregon, both interior offensive lineman. Someone on the offensive line will be drafted here unless if a really good hybrid linebacker falls here.
29. NEW YORK GIANTS: BRIAN CUSHING, OLB, USC: I know this is crazy but for some reason I have Cushing falling this far down the draft . Yes, if he is still there for Buffalo to take, they will take him and then the Giants will reach for WR Mohamed Massaquoi. Here is to thinking Dick Jaruon is making the draft pick play making and someone else that will actually run the ball with the lead late in the fourth quarter.
30. TENNESSEE TITANS: VONTAE DAVIS, CB, ILLINOIS: Although he is not the best corner in the draft, he is extremely talented. Jeff Fisher has a history of drafting guys that were overlooked and make them in too very solid players in the NFL. Davis has had a problem with his work ethic and has really not shown scouts the speed needed to be an elite corner in this league. He is a playmaker though and would be a great value pick for the Titans at this point. Character is an issue.
31. ARIZONA CARDINALS: DONALD BROWN, RB,UCONN: A lot of people are talking about this guy. He is a play maker and is very shifty and has great speed and is tough as nails. He is an all 3 down back and will take on a load if need be. With Edgerrinn James old and Hightower a bruiser, Brown would be a nice addition. The Pats are very interested in this kid and may take him up higher. Either him or possibly a linebacker.
32. PITTSBURGH STEELERS: ERIC WOOD, C, LOUISVILLE: The Super Bowl champs need to work on improving the interior of their offensive line. Recently, Wood has shot up the board because he has that lower body strength and toughness Pittsburgh loves. I think they will end up drafting a guard in the second round.

Well that’s it….No this was not copy pasted….just have been doing a lot of reading and watching tape on the toilet lately….

We are all followers..

  1. Stan, how did you miss giving a "Hey Jonnnnnnnnnnny, Welcome to the Big Show!", Simmons-Jacko greeting?

Jonny, awesome. This was insanely extensive. Did you camp out at the NFL combine or something?

Agree with you on Harvin being a bust. Last night he was busted with weed, apparently trying to follow in your boy Ricky Williams extremely successful football technique.

  2. John, amazing job. I can't imagine how long this took to write. Great work, and finally some FOOTBALL on the blog.

With that being said however, I gotta disagree with what you predict the Jets to do. You see, the Skins want Sanchez very badly, and what Snyder wants, Snyder gets. He's not scared to mortgage his future, Campbell has already demanded a trade, and they have more bargaining chips than the Jets. Therefore, I think the Skins trade up and draft Sanchez and beat the Jets to the punch. As a result, the Jets will follow your exact analysis, and are committed to making their run-first offense better. Therefore, they will trade down to the early to mid 20's and receive another pick (probably from a team who'd like to draft Josh Freeman at 17, or Heyward-Bey), and will then draft Pettigrew at their new slot. He's a huge tight end who can catch the ball realy well, and blocks like a beast. I think that this is the way it will go. The truth is, I don't want to give up so much for Sanchez, a guy who only started 16 college games, at a school where he was totally surrounded by NFL ready players. I think he'll be good, but never elite. Those are my thoughts.

Lastly, if you're picks are correct John, then this will be the year that the Miami Hurricanes streak of having a player selected in the first round will end. Last time they didn't have one was 1993. Sorry John. I know it must've been hard to put an FSU and Gator in the first round. Go Canes!

  3. Great stuff, John.

In hindsight, I'd probably have said that the Jets trade down to the 5th pick and take Mark Sanchez. But what do I know? I'm just a Mets fan.

    Oh, and let's go Dolphins.

P.S. - Is it true Mel Kiper Jr. will be in the upcoming Star Trek movie and playing... HIMSELF? No costume change here, people!
