The Obituaries..

Welcome to the Big Show....
Rest in peace Tracy Mcgrady. Your NBA career is dead. After injuring his knee yet again it appears that Tracy is going to have Micro Fracture surgery. This is like the kryptonite for NBA Players. Or the " We have to talk " line from your girl friend. You simply do not recover from this.
The only man in recent memory to fully recover from the surgery was Amare Stoudemire and he was 22 years old , practically a baby...So why can't Mcgrady recover? He is only 29 years old.. Well the fact that he is 29 years old is kind of misleading. He came in to the league in 1997-98 and was 18. He has played 11 NBA seasons. I don't think that the players age has as much to do with there wear and tear as does the amount of professional basketball they have played. So unfortunately for T-Mac he most likely will be the next Penny Hardaway ( with out the doll of course) . You will probably hear about him coming back like 5 times. He will eventually end up as a 7th or 8th man on some bad teams bench ... Next season his will be an expiring contract , and those get passed around like a bong at a Michael Phelps party.

So the question is, what is Tracy Mcgrady's legacy?? Is he a hall of famer??

So looking back at his career it is clear to me that T Mac is the most overrated player to ever play the game. He was treated as a leader and as a go to guy for his team but he never delivered. Tracy Mcgrady was the guy who put up 40 points in the first forty three minutes of the game but when it came to crunch time he never delivered for his team.. ( It's kind of the opposite of that one episode of Law and Order where the lawyers and detectives can't figure anything out at all until there are like two minutes left in the show and the somehow figure it out just in time for the final scene…Wait that's every episode of Law and Order.. God I hate those shows) He also never seems to play… He is always hurt .. Kind of hard to be a great player when you never actually suit up for your team…

The most obvious knock on his game is that he never carried his team out of the first round. To play 82 games and get to the playoffs and not making a serious run..What's the point? ( That's like going to a Yankee game and not booing A rod... What's the point??.. God I hate A -Rod) There may be no bigger knock on an NBA player then that..

What happened next was both unexpected and funny … I went to look at some of his stats to back up all the perceptions that I have thought, and been told, by every NBA analyst about Mcgrady ….and it turns out it was not really true. The reality is he played in 80 percent of his teams games for his career. While that is not great , that is also not horrible.( Sort of like Diet Pepsi.. You don't prefer it but if you get it .. you can deal with it) By comparison , Ray Allen, has played in 84 percent of his games. He is viewed as tough and hard working...Does not seem fair..
So I went to my bread and butter for this blog, the fact that he has never won a playoff series… It turns out that his stats in the playoffs were far better then his regular season stats… He averaged 6 more points , two more assists and more rebounds per game. So maybe it was not his fault..... In comparison David Robinson's playoff average is 3 points lower then his season average.. The Admiral does not get a reputation as a choker... It doesn't seem fair..
Mcgrady also led the league in scoring for two seasons .( Although that stat is a little bogus.. The last time the league leader in scoring won the championship was Shaq in 1999-2000). Tracy also made the all star game seven time in 11 years… It is kind of strange the difference between perception and reality....

So after realizing that the stats don't really back up my T-Mac hate ...I was pretty bummed. I talked to my man Saul and he told me that this happens a lot…

For example , Derek Jeter.. (I know this seems like blasphemy but it has to be said) .. Derek Jeter has a reputation of being the cluchest guy in baseball… After looking at the stats it turns out that is not really the case… His batting average in the playoffs is seven points below his regular season batting average.. Granted his playoff batting average is still .309 in the playoffs but it is still lower. His on base percentage is down in the playoffs… In 2007, the last time the Yankees were in the playoff s he batted .176.. ( Forget it I take it back.. Derek Jeter is the best player in the history of the game… I repeat Derek Jeter is the best player in the history of the game.)

BTW..only 257 days until my New York Yankees take their revenge on the entire world...

This kind of reminds me of going to a casino .. When you are in the car on the way there your perception is ,"This is will be the greatest night of our lives. We will meet random people, laugh the night away and most importantly we will win thousands of dollars.." Then you get there and the place stinks like smoke, the music is awful ,the people there make you wish you were hugging your mother and, at least for me, you never win money.. For some reason in our head every time you go back you forget the last time and think this time will be different.

So the truth is if someone asked me is Tracy Mcgrady a hall of famer I would say no.. Perception or reality ...I just don't think you can be a hall of famer in the NBA if you have not done at least one of these three things.. 1) Won a championship. 2) Been the MVP once 3) An All star 10 + Plus times… T Mac has not done any of those. So maybe the perception about him is actually true..Or Maybe not...

RIP Tracy…You will be missed… a little

  2. 1. McGrady is not done. Shall we call you The Big Show, M.D. ???

    2. T-mac has not only put up amazing numbers, but you are forgetting the comeback against the Spurs in like 2003-2004. Sounds clutch to me...

    3. Derek Jeter was never on the juice, period. He was also a consistent 300 hitter, led the league in runs almost every year(underrated stat), and produced good power for a shortstop. Hes a yankee legend. Back off.

Keep up the good work big man.

  3. 1)Foxwoods has a smoke-free poker room and no music. The people are still super sketchy though. As far as losing money goes, you can't lose what you don't put in the middle. But you can't win much either.

2)Do you remember a radio host on the old 620 named Arnie Spanier (or something like that) who used to count down the days until his teams won the championship?

3)MVP voting is screwed up by the media who don't look at stats. All-Star Game voting is screwed up by the fans, who (to a lesser degree) also don't look at stats.

  5. well said, I've always felt Tmac was a little overrated (sorta like Lebron), but the fact he is only 29, I think he will pull off a Grant Hill.

  6. I agree, T-mac was overshadowed by the Vin-sanity
early in his career, and in my opinion never left it, although he tried to. He is a prolific scorer, and amazing leaper, but not a leader. His stats may say he is clutch, but until he can lead his troops on the court, without being overshadowed by anyone else, he will not move up to that elite status that should be used to determine HOF. But give hime credit for his early years though, him and vince sure put on some nice dunk contests!

  7. Yes Avrohom.. you can call me DR. T Mac will never be the same. You are gonna tell me that a guy who has never been out of the first round is clutch because of one game. Seriously??
With regard to Jeter ..what your saing is true but that doesn't mean that he is as clutch as he gets credit for.. Which was my point

  9. Hey Big Show,
Best blog yet. Props to my main man Ayebaybay anyone who mentions Arnie Spanier is golden. T-Mac is a dude I've been defending for years. He is an extremely talented individual who treats the game as a job. He comes out to play, does his thing and possibly because of his lazy eye comes across to your average Joe NBA fan as not caring about whether his team wins or loses. Now this may or may not be true, but I think Big show discovered what most people don’t see. Caring about your team success isn't necessarily correlated with wins and losses as long as you go out and play to your ability. One thing is for sure, when T-Mac is on the court his abilities and numbers speak for themselves. He won't be a Hall of Famer unless he puts up numbers for another 3-5 years. I like T-Mac and I'm sticking to that assessment.

  11. Good Point Romo. He does look like his mom had just woken him up for the game and he ran to make the bus... An awake T-Mac? He might've dropped 26 in that amount of time.
